What began as committed fieldwork under MKM has evolved and grown into IRSAAN — with a clearer structure, the same roots and values, and a deeper sense of what truly matters. The journey has never been ours alone; we’ve made it alongside people, communities, and organizations who shaped it with us.
How IRSAAN came to be...
IRSAAN was not born from a single decision or sudden inspiration.
It grew slowly, over years of work, reflection, and hard lessons. After more than a decade working at the intersection of humanitarian response, institutional development, and field-level implementation, it became clear that humanitarian action — by nature — is not built for the long haul, a truth that, when lived directly, strikes far deeper than when merely studied at the university.
We began becoming aware of a simple but difficult reality: many people, across large NGOs, ministries, and small grassroots organizations, were working with deep commitment but facing systemic obstacles that made lasting impact difficult to achieve.
We saw projects implemented without sustainability, teams overwhelmed by complexity, and good intentions often diluted by operational constraints. Coupled with harsh environments and stagnation, it became increasingly difficult to build, attract, and retain talent.
We also witnessed resources — financial, human, and institutional — that could have been used more effectively if only the structures around them had been stronger, clearer, and more grounded in context. In many cases, impact became a bonus, not a requirement.
These observations were not distant; they came from direct experience: working inside organizations, supporting projects in the field, and witnessing firsthand the gaps between aspirations and execution. We lived those realities firsthand: the hardship, the frustration, the relentless pressure of daily urgencies, and the quiet, gnawing and eroding feeling of powerlessness in the face of human suffering.
Meet Our Team
In 2015, recognizing the need for a different approach, we created MKM: Mheiriz Knowledge Management. MKM was a modest yet aspirational initiative designed to help NGOs and institutions do things better.
Conducting major research studies, evaluating infrastructure projects, training NGO staff and community leaders, and offering technical support to initiatives both in the refugee camps and in solidarity organizations and NGOs abroad. It was an attempt to bridge some of the gaps we had witnessed — not through grand gestures, but through careful, context-driven, and quiet work.
However, working through voluntary efforts alone proved unsustainable. Personal circumstances eventually led us to pause MKM’s activities. Still, the underlying needs we had identified — for better systems, for grounded support, for long-term thinking — remained, and in many areas, grew even more urgent.
Over the following years, we continued to engage deeply in humanitarian and development work: managing projects, supporting field teams, building systems inside NGOs, and staying connected to the practical realities faced by communities

This period was not a retreat; it was a time of learning and sharpening. We gained a clearer understanding of how impact is built — not by improvisation, but through deliberate systems, strategic clarity, and collaboration that respects context rather than imposing models.
It was from this experience that IRSAAN emerged. IRSAAN is the continuation of the commitment that started with MKM, but with greater capacity, broader vision, and a stronger foundation. It was not created as a reaction to frustration, but as a response shaped by years of work, reflection, and preparation.
Today, IRSAAN stands as an independent initiative committed to helping organizations, institutions, and communities build systems that work, strategies that endure, and capacities that grow sustainably over time.
Structured around three pillars — strategic services, civic action, and knowledge dissemination — IRSAAN is designed not only to offer high-quality support, but also to contribute thoughtfully to the broader ecosystem it is part of.
IRSAAN exists to bridge the gap — between humanitarian urgency and development strategy, between ambition and capacity, and to move from performative transplanted models to innovative solutions built on lived reality.
And while we know that change will not come easily, we also know that it starts by refusing to settle for less. We believe that meaningful impact is possible even in the most complex contexts — if we build it carefully, with patience, seriousness, and a deep respect for the realities we serve.
